Teach and Travel in China!
Summer 2013
Next summer SABEH is offering a five-week opportunity to experience Chinese culture, schools, teaching, and travel with eager Chinese teachers of English while sharing American methods of teaching English based heavily on oral interchange.
Teaching - four weeks / Traveling - one week: July - August 2013
Objectives:
- To introduce American culture and education with an emphasis on dynamic and creative instructional strategies to Chinese teachers and students
- To share educational philosophies and principles with Chinese participants
- To relate collegially with teachers who teach English in Chinese schools
- To experience one of the most dynamic cultures in our world today
- To make friends
- To teach, to learn, to travel, to have fun!

This program has already flourished for 7 years, first in Beijing and Chongqing, and more recently in Fuzhou, Nanjing, and Hangzhou, where teams of 3-6 teachers have worked with several hundred Chinese teachers and students. Teaching lasts for 4 weeks. The fifth week is one of travel. Asked what was most rewarding about the experience in 2011, one teacher summed up what many expressed in different ways:
“I think 3 things compete for this honor. 1) The opportunity to work with teachers from China and learn about their concerns, challenges, and issues in the classroom was rewarding. I felt a trust and bond with them that I did not expect. In some ways their days are very different from ours, but at the heart of the matter we are the same. We all want what is best for the children. We all have standards and expectations that are stress inducing, but we all want to do our best. 2) Meeting the other American teachers and forming bonds and memories with them has been rewarding. I do believe that I made life-long friendships with some amazing people. 3) I believe that any time you are immersed in another culture and have daily challenges small and/or great, it is a learning experience and a growing experience. It allows us to see the world and our own day-to-day experiences through a broader lens and I am sure that at the very least, it makes us better educators.”

In summer 2012 SABEH will take teams of K-12 teachers of any subject with at least 3 years of experience, who are creative, adventurous and willing to learn several strategies for teaching English as a foreign language, to several sites in China, including Fuzhou and Hangzhou.
Teachers teach a maximum of three 90-minute classes per day, five days a week (4-1/2 x 5 + 22-1/2 hours per week). This does not include planning time, which usually adds at least another hour or two each day, depending on the group.
Cost: American teachers pay for visas and international airfare, half of which will be reimbursed after the first week of teaching.
Since American teachers are volunteers, Chinese hosts take care of all the rest-- e.g., half the international airfare, in-country travel, and room and board.
